WESTMORELAND:
Defending champions Broughton Cricket Club beat New Roads by seven wickets in the Social Development Commission SDC Westmoreland Twenty/20 cricket final on Sunday at the Chantilly Field.
Damion Brown, 24, and Nigel Pryce, 22, were the top batsmen for New Roads, which batted first and made 105 all out from 18 overs.
Broughton replied with 110 for three wickets in 15 overs, with captain Dixieth Palmer hitting a top score of 32, and decent contributions coming from Ewan Andrews, 24, Derrick Thompson, 20, and Damion Davidson, 15.
Mandate
Eric Stewart and Howard Duncan were the wicket-takers for New Roads, while Derrick Thompson, Clive Thomas and Ralston Levy took two wickets apiece for Broughton.
For the victory, Broughton collected $30,000, while New Roads received $15,000.
Westmoreland's parish manager for SDC, Ron Daley, expressed satisfaction in the mandate set by the commission to reach out to the communities through sports. He said the event was greatly accepted by the different communities and participation was tremendous.
"They were anticipating the cricket competition and now that it is over they can't wait for next season to start it all over again," he remarked.
Broughton, which had also won the competition in 2006, will represent Westmoreland in the all-island competition and Palmer is optimistic that his team will do well.
"The players are in high spirits and they have the experience to go all the way, so we are looking for good performances at the next level."
Prior to the start of the game, businessman Pete Drummond, who sponsors the Broughton team, donated cricketing gears to two members of the club - Paul Palmer and Jerome Williams - both students and members of the St Elizabeth Technical High School cricket team.
