Guyana leaders salute Barack
published: Friday | November 7, 2008

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Guyana's two main political leaders have joined with other key sectors in welcoming the election of a new president of the United States (US).

In a congratulatory message sent to Barack Obama on behalf of the government and people of Guyana, President Bharrat Jagdeo acknowledged the historic significance of his election as the first black president of the US.

Jagdeo said Tuesday's poll, in which Obama garnered more than 50 per cent of the popular vote, was "proof of the confidence of the people of the United States of America in your capacity to lead and in your inspiring vision for their great country.

"It is also a testimony to the integrity of the democratic traditions and values which are upheld by the countries of our hemisphere.

"I wish you every success as you prepare to undertake the duties of your high office," the statement said.

In a historic triumph that broke down racial barriers, the 47-year-old Democratic senator from Illinois was ushered to high office on Tuesday, beating out Republican Senator John McCain in the race for the White House.

As he prepares to take his place as the 44th president of the United States with his inauguration on January 20, the main opposition in Guyana said it was also very pleased with his victory.

Historic milestone

The leader of the People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R), Robert Corbin, in his message to the president-elect, said the win constitutes an historic milestone for the US in general and the African-American community in particular.

Corbin said Obama's triumph epitomises the strength of the democratic process in the United States.

He also said the PNC/R anticipates a new chapter in the relations between the US and Latin America and the Caribbean.
