Chairman and CEO of GraceKennedy Ltd, Douglas Orane, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of the West Indies at the institution's graduation ceremony, yesterday.

"When it finally sank in, I had a feeling of pride that such an eminent institution would recognise me. I really feel good about it because it is a reflection not only on my achievements, but the achievements of those of all the people who have supported me over the years," Orane told The Gleaner before the ceremony.

So, what was his family's reaction?

"Oh they're thrilled!" Orane said. He went on to point out that his wife, Michelle, and other members of his family would be attending the ceremony.

"My younger daughter was so excited, she actually travelled from New York for the graduation ceremony. I was very touched by that."

Orane commented on how his journey to success started with the discipline he received as a student at Wolmer's High School for Boys, and from his parents who taught him the value of hard work.

He also pointed to United States President-elect Barack Obama as an incredible role model for youth, everywhere.

positions held

Douglas Orane was appointed CEO of GraceKennedy Ltd in 1995 and, in 1998, he assumed the position of chairman. He has held notable positions such as president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (1992 and 1994), and was appointed an Independent Senator in the Jamaican Senate in 1998.

Last night, Ambassador Havelock Brewster, an international consultant, was also presented with an honorary degree from UWI.

A Guyanese national, Brewster was presented with a Doctor of Laws Degree for his sterling career as an international civil servant.

Today, Dame Carlene Davis will also be presented with an honorary degree.

Michael Lee Chin and Jamaican consultant Roderick Rainford were the other persons to be presented with honorary doctorates.
