Former stars for memorial meet
published: Sunday | November 9, 2008

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

A STAR-STUDDED line up of former top go-kart drivers will get an opportunity to relive their glory days when they renew old rivalries at the grand finale race meet scheduled for next weekend at the Palisadoes International Raceway in Kingston.

The stellar event will be the Abe Ziadie Memorial race. Ziadie is a past president of the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA). He was shot and killed by gunmen at a fast food store on Constant Spring Road more than eight years ago.

"This race will be contested by seven former go-karters who used to race with Abe Ziadie back in the day. Among the invitees are William Fong Yee, Gary Gregg, Douglas Donald, Mex Lodenquai, along with the husband and wife team of Paul and Lisa Lee," president of the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA), Neil Williams, told The Gleaner on Friday.

The JKA is now preparing some Yamaha go-karts for the former stars. Of the group of invited karters, Donald was among the most popular winners.

Apart from the Abe Ziadie race, there will be a special race where all the karts will compete for another trophy.

Outside of that, there will also be regular racing between karters challenging for class championships.

Seven-year-old Mark Anthony Eaton, Phillip Myers, Colin Daley Jr, Justine Jackson and Dane Lawson are among the karters expected to do well.
