The future is bright
published: Thursday | November 13, 2008

Hylton

Today The Gleaner presents the views of Patrick Hylton, group managing director at the National Commercial Bank, on the positive traits of Jamaica as a nation.

I was amazed, and at the same time humbled, to read about several who achieved phenomenal results in their external examinations and were continuing their studies towards achieving their dreams.

What's right with Jamaica are the positive accounts of Jamaican young people.

I am personally aware of many of these high achievers who were faced with adversities but turned these challenges into opportunities. The dedication and persistence demonstrated by these young people convinced me that the future of Jamaica is bright.

Our resilience

What's right with Jamaica is our resilience as a people. The passing of Tropical Storm Gustav comes to mind. The images on our televisions and the pictures in the newspapers were sometimes unbelievable, and what little 'inconveniences' some of us experienced were not worth mentioning. But, how heartening it was to hear of neighbours doing whatever they could to lessen each others burden - a great example that "many hands make hard work light".

As Jamaicans, we must play our part in making Jamaica right. Why not start now?
