Let us pray for Obama
published: Thursday | November 13, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am wondering if anyone else felt the great chill in the air that started November 5. No, I am not talking about the impending onset of winter in these northern climes but the very cold attitudes that white people are now displaying since the Obama victory.

Sure, they are saying the right things on tv but, in the personal interactions with them on the job, I have yet to receive even a verbal high five. While blacks floated on air and just exulted in the long awaited victory, most whites that I saw, hardly mentioned it except to comment on the size of the Grant Park crowd.

Mountain to climb

This reaction just reinforced the fact that not much has changed. My boss is still white and all the people up the food chain are still white. As a matter of fact, the majority of people who control the money in this country are still white.

While we celebrate this momentous occasion, let us not lose sight of the mountain that still has to be climbed and, as messiah-like as Obama appears, he is just a mere mortal, entrusted with a great country in serious crisis mode. If he does as well as expected, the ice will thaw and hope will spring eternal. Let us pray for him.

I am, etc.,
