A message on the cost of living
published: Saturday | November 15, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Isn't it strange that in one country $1 will buy a cup of coffee, in another, such as Jamaica, $1 will only buy confectioneries only kids favour, but in another country that same $1 will feed a person for several days?

Why does money have such different buying power from one country to the next?

Perhaps it's because there are differences in exchange rates. Or, maybe inflation has driven prices higher in some countries.

The cost of living may vary from place to place but the value of human life is and will always be the same: it's priceless.

However, this message needs to be taught to our fellowmen as soon as they can understand their native tongue. This way, they can grow with a certain level of respect for their counterparts.

Each person a miracle

I consider each person a miracle as during the process of conception millions of sperms vie for the position of fertilising the female's egg. The one that does determines the sex of the unborn child, among other factors. However, I consider the lucky one a winner, as coming in first in a race among millions can only be as a result of one thing: God himself made it possible.

The probability that a snail could have won such a race is very unlikely. However, if God hand-picked that same snail and put him at the finishing line seconds before the others, undoubtedly, he would be declared the winner!

So, along this same line of reasoning, at the birth of every human, each is already a victor, a success, a conqueror, to make it more clear - an unsung hero!

Let us, with this thought in mind, regard each other in the same high esteem as you would Prince Charles of our mother country England or one of our Olympians like Usain Bolt.

Armed with this new aspect of life, let us live truth instead of professing it. Become responsible humans, though it is something people dread, yet it is the one thing that develops us, gives us manhood - fibre.

I am, etc.,
