Spaceman, Classical Bullet to fly

The focus this time of the year is on the two-year-olds, as they come out in full force for some lucrative races in the last quarter.

Today, eight maiden and untried two-year-old colts and geldings are slated for the Royal Lancaster Trophy over the round five course. This is the co-feature with the Rameses Trophy over 1600 metres (restricted allowance one), in which seven have been declared.

This has attracted the likes of SPACEMAN, ZUNZUN, JET SKIER and LITTLERICHBOY. It could go down to the wire.

SPACEMAN, a front-running three-year-old gelding to be ridden by Dane Nelson for trainer Anthony 'Baba' Nunes, should give the Superstakes winning duo another cup race win from the convenient mark of 51.0kg.

Turning to the Royal Lancaster Trophy, it would be fitting to see the Husseys winning this race with the debutant PROGRESSIVE, seeing that it is being run in honour of Royal Lancaster, who was an outstanding two-year-old in 1985. The grey colt, who was owned by Mrs. Ruth Hussey, was unbeaten in 1985 to be voted the champion two-year-old that year.

A bay colt by Vanadium out of Fabulous Wedding, PROGRESSIVE has shown good speed at exercise, galloping five furlongs in 1:02.3 on November 6. His most recent gallop, 5-1/2 furlongs in 1:10.4, would suggest he is not as forward as some of the others and although expected to figure prominently, will be better for the experience.

Both CLASSICAL BULLET and MEELO should come in for a lot of support on the strength of their performances on last, while GUAN YU has run encouragingly in his last two races and will not be out of it.

The Richard Azan-trained MEELO (Lasix administered) was all the rage on his debut a month ago but, in the end, was beaten by a nose by his lesser fancied stable companion, PONSETTA, over this trip in the pedestrian time of 1:02.3.

Preference is for CLASSICAL BULLET, who was five lengths second to the highly thought of newcomer FABULOUSCONNECTION in the valuable Hi-Pro Stables Choice Feeds Trophy over 1300 metres on October 20 (Heroes Day).

14-time champion trainer

With Nelson riding for 14-time champion trainer Philip Feanny, CLASSICAL BULLET has worked well in preparation for this race, galloping three furlongs in a brisk 35.3 Wednesday morning.

Indications are that the Western Classic-Mississippi Train colt has improved and, with less to do in present company, should open his account at the expense of MEELO under in-form Shane Ellis and the Feanny-trained GUAN YU, the mount of Philadelphia Park-based Jamaican jockey Dal Brown.

Other firm fancies on the card are TWENTY-NINE in the third race, JACK N DBOX over FULL SPECTRUM in the fourth, SAMBA DANCER to catch CHIEF COUNCILLOR in the sixth, CHARLIE CHAPLIN in the eighth and down in class TOBAGO in the ninth for overnight allowance horses.
