The Editor, Sir:While I do not make a blanket charge, like many Jamaicans, my heart despairs concerning the calibre of persons who have been accepted for political leadership in Jamaica over the years.
1. I am not an ape of American culture, but I do admire the manner in which they scrutinise public leaders for moral rectitude. These people are being lifted to offices that should qualify them as public examples and morality is still an important factor in successful national development.
2. On another note, competence: We need to put aside our political allegiance to accept the fact that persons need to be qualified for the posts they hold. We need to reach the level where Cabinet members have qualifications, academic and experiential in the areas in which they are expected to perform. Are our politicians exempt? Certainly, the positions they hold are some of the most senior positions in our land.
3. Finally, we need inspiration. The Jamaican public at this time needs leaders who can kindle some sense of excitement, belonging and pride. This is not a call for messiahs, but a strong desire for politicians to be able to fulfil the need for 'get-on-board' patriotism, especially among our young.
I am, etc.,
