Time to get tough on crime

Published: Thursday | December 4, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Once again, our nation's utterly disturbing, seemingly intractable crime problem, especially regarding murders, has catapulted the issue of capital punishment to the forefront of everyone's consciousness. Con-sequently, our hapless (and apparently clueless) government has been reeling under tremendous pressure to bring the situation under control.

Yet, instead of burning the midnight oil to come up with decidedly effective solutions, our political leaders have opted to emulate Nero, the insane emperor of ancient Rome, and fiddle while Jamaica burns.

Parliamentary circus act

It seems to me that parliamentary circus act - laughably described as a 'conscience vote' - that they performed in the honourable House recently was, for all intents and purposes, a mere red herring, giving the false impression that they have a firm grasp of the need to take action,

However, the efficacy of that hoax has expired. The electorate has matured considerably and is no longer inclined to be gullible. Just as eagerly it enabled the JLP administration to ride trium-phantly into Jamaica House on a stunning white steed called 'Hope', it will chase them out disgracefully on an emaciated grey ass called 'Nope!'

My humble advice to the government is to do whatever it takes to get crime under control right now. Time is running out!

I am etc.,

Mr Cool.
