How to deal with bauxite
Published: Friday | December 5, 2008
I read the article in The Gleaner of December 3, on the future of the bauxite industry, and what to do to save it. Here is my proposal.
This is an opportunity that we had missed over the years, now it comes back and we should consider it a blessing in disguise.
We should have accepted 50 per cent payment in cash and the other 50 per cent in aluminium and we should have been stockpiling the metal over those years.
Opportunity
Now, here is our opportunity to do just that. The Government of Jamaica should now renegotiate the deals with those bauxite companies and take payment in cash and aluminium, the finished product, and stockpile it. The way the world is going, there will be a huge demand for the material down the road. and if we don't seize on this opportunity now, we will lose the entire industry , and we might end up before long paying companies to mine the bauxite.
I am, etc.,
