Issue: Government stimulus not enough

Published: Saturday | December 20, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Bruce Golding is copying the stimulus packages announced in the United States, but they won't work here in Jamaica! America is a vast continent with the options of innumerable resources and enormous overseas investments all across the globe.

Golding spoke about tax relief for hotels and big loan packages to revive the tourism sector. The spin-off of all these 'bright' ideas will hurt the pockets of those who cannot find basic needs to survive. I am predicting a massive increase of all food costs across the board come next year.

Government is only for the managers

It seems this Government is only for the managers and hotel entrepreneurs. It won't be business as usual for those receiving a meagre salary and also those who can hardly put food on the table. What a 'dickance' if the price of oil on the world market starts to rise again?

Increases in 2009

I am forecasting that 2009 will see increases in motor vehicle licences again, bus fares, utility bills, land and house taxes, passports, certain food items regularly purchased by the poor - almost every consumable product.

Did anyone realise that the hike in interest rates was a precursor for this wave of so-called monetary relief packages? Bruce Golding is seeking partisan fulfilment while putting Jamaica on a sea-saw ride, with the poor unable to maintain their balance.

I am, etc.,

Delroy Lawrence
