Honeymoon is over

Published: Saturday | December 20, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

It is ironic that when the banking crisis exploded in the United States about two months ago, the Golding administration and its financial team was out front declaring in loud voices that the US crisis would have little effect on the Jamaican economy. Our stocks and investments are not tied to them in a big way, they said.

Soon after all the public posturing they started backing off their statements as it became clear that things were not going well. Since then, they have come out with their version of a bailout and the line for help formed with the tourism industry getting the lion's share. Some, like Air Jamaica, never left the line and now the bauxite industry is ailing and asking for help.

No more excuses

Today, the Jamaican dollar is trading at $80 against what is really a weak American dollar. To date, 213 people have been killed in St James alone. The largely symbolic 'conscience vote' on capital punishment is still hanging around while crime still rages unchecked islandwide, with an ineffective police force and a military guarding nothing.

Clearly, the honeymoon is long over, and the excuses of growing pains cannot be used anymore. It is time for this administration that promised so much in the election to start delivering. The Jamaican people are very resilient and very resourceful, but sooner rather than later the elected government has to step up and do its part.

PM sidetracked

Part of Mr Golding's appeal was the great curiosity and intelligence that he has displayed over the years leading up to his election to the nation's highest office. It is very disheartening to see him sidetracked with issues such as arguments over gays in his Cabinet. He has displayed a propensity to want to micromanage everything, therefore, not allowing his appointed ministers to earn their pay.

I am, etc.,
