Don't say the T-word - Great gifts for the big guy
Published: Saturday | December 20, 2008

Shopping for Dad's birthday is often head-scratching, hand-wringing torment. Christmas is no different. Whereas shopping for moms might be an easier task, fathers force kids to summon up every iota of creativity. After all, the big guy rarely even shops for himself.
As the clock runs down, strung-out loved ones make a last-gasp lunge for the no-brainer that has become the default gift of yesterday: the tie. Yep, the T-word has historically been viewed as the 11th-hour lifesaver, but it's time to conjure up imaginative ideas and ditch those cheesy ties, predictable colognes and socks that suck. Why not give him a gift that he'll actually use or something he'll remember for years.
Saturday Life's Christmas picks are great surprises and are bound to take his breath away! (Have the ambulance on speed dial, just in case.)
If the man of the house loves beer, consider giving him a personalised key-chain bottle opener. It's a deceptively simple gift polished off with innovation. Make it more special by engraving his name on the surface. This won't cost you your life savings, can be done in a jiffy and is available islandwide.
Sports, many argue, is the man's domain at home. So spoil Dad for the holiday season with a commitment (you'd better stick to your word) to buy him tickets for the next Reggae Boyz or West Indies match? Or treat him to sports memorabilia. Get him a poster, jersey, signed card or ball of his favourite team or player. If Dad not only watches sports but is pretty nifty himself, upgrade his sports equipment - new golf clubs, basketball or a special-edition domino pack.
Pop will be the envy of his hang-out friends in cool, customisable Nikes. You design the shoe on nike.com: Pick out his favourite colours and a logo just for him to make a sneaker as unique as he is. Be prepared to dig a little deeper in your pockets for this one.
Get out your dust masks and gloves because you're taking a trip down memory lane. Help Dad remember the oldies through his old vinyls by framing them. Trust me, it ain't as hard as it sounds. The hard part is cleaning the LPs.
No more forearms taking up half the picture: This funky, flexible and affordable gadget will make taking family portraits much easier as it will stand on or wrap around whatever you attach it to. Now Dad just has to master his GQ pose before the timer hits zero.
Does dad enjoy reading magazines? Does he have a special hobby or interest? You're sure to find a magazine that he'll enjoy. Sports Illustrated is a popular choice, but also look at other titles like: Wired, PC World, Men's Health, Details, Maxim, Rolling Stone, National Geographic and Golf Digest.
Pay for a year's subscription and watch him kick back under the mango tree on Sunday afternoons, a picture of satisfaction from cover to cover.
Blu-ray is the latest format for high-definition DVD movies and entertainment. Dad will love the superb reproduction that this player offers, bringing movie-theatre quality for home viewers.
If Dad's a busy professional, he's going to love the new BlackBerry Storm, featuring a big, bold touch screen. Other goodies are downloadable GPS maps, crisp audio, music and, of course, the best PDA (personal digital assistant) email service around. It's also gorgeous to look at. Let him press and be impressed.
