Illiteracy concerns in St Bess
I work at a public institution in St Elizabeth, and since my arrival here, I have been quite astonished by the level of illiteracy evident in the St Elizabeth community. Many people are unable to sign legal or medical documents. Even more distressing, is the fact that many people are ignorant as to the year, month or day in which they are living, yet, St Elizabeth has formidable primary and secondary schools.
I also notice this level of ignorance, lack of basic education and illiteracy cuts across all age groups - young and old.
I believe some form of ministerial intervention is required and in an urgent fashion.
Being the bread basket community is not enough, as education is obviously an important factor to aid the development of the country.

Recession no excuse to ignore the poor
When I was growing up, it was very common to hear people in my home district of James Hill knocking our shop counter shouting out "sell mi half a bread", but, no one was buying half bully beef, half of cake soap, a bag of syrup or half of a bulla. I am ashamed to see this is happening in Jamaica in 2008, as was reported recently.
The Government must act immediately to stop this going any further. The Government must fulfil its promise made during the elections that it would improve the standard of living of every single Jamaican.
It is now 'gospel' that most of the world's economies are in recession, but that is no excuse for the needs of Jamaicans to be placed at the back of the Government's agenda.
Please Mr Prime Minister it is not too late to fulfil your promises.

Searching for Josephine Miller
I was abandoned as a child and was found in Manchester between 1985 and1987 by a market woman who used to sell there. I would like to get in contact with her.
Her name is Josephine Miller, I am not sure where she lives now in Jamaica. The last time I had queried I was told she was living in Christiana, Manchester.
I just want to show my gratitude to her for rescuing me!
She can contact me at:
011-0696-766871 or contact my counsellor at: 465-4803.
Please don't publish my name.
