Good treatment at US embassy

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am writing in response to a recent letter regarding poor treatment at the United States embassy. In June, I had the pleasure of going to the new US Embassy in Kingston. I had filed for a visa for my fiancé (I did not use a lawyer).

Although the immigration process is long and exhausting, I was pleasantly surprised at the treatment at the embassy. I had heard different stories about them and was concerned and scared. Boy was I wrong.

In my opinion, I believe they already know whether you are approved when you reach the window. The person at the window had just been handed the folder and could not have reviewed every little detail of my 100-page application.

Treated with much respect

My fiancé and I were treated with much respect by our different representatives and our time in the embassy was efficient and quick.

I did however see the challenges of others at the windows, but it was their (or families) fault. I saw one young woman being grilled about falsified information on her application that her mother (who was filing for her) had given. The poor girl didn't understand a thing. She was sent to the embassy by her family in the US and she had to answer for her mother's lies and she didn't have a clue, so she was rejected.

That situation was her family's fault, not the embassy's.

I used the embassy's customer service email throughout the process and was always given prompt responses, I never had to wait more than two to three days for an answer. Most times, I received information on the same day!

Incomplete and incorrect applications

Give credit to the embassy; they deal with all kinds of people and attitudes, incomplete and incorrect applications and they do this all day every day. I'm sure it can get tedious at times and sure the customer may sometimes catch an attitude from the representative. However, I also saw attitude being given to them. This happens in every job everywhere at some time. Everyone is entitled to a bad day.

I am, etc.,
