Windies make early stumble
Published: Monday | December 22, 2008
Fast bowler Fidel Edwards grabbed his first seven-wicket haul in Tests to foil New Zealand's advance, but West Indies were wobbling at the close of a topsy-turvy third day of the decisive second Test at McLean Park yesterday.
Edwards, bowling with the heart and commitment that deserted the rest of the Windies attack, claimed seven for 87 to send the hosts tumbling for 371 after they appeared set to mount a daunting reply to the Windies' 307.
Trailing runs
Trailing by 64, West Indies got off to a frenetic start in their second innings with captain Chris Gayle and Sewnarine Chattergoon posting a rapid 58 for the first wicket.
But two quick wickets late in the day reduced West Indies to 62 for two, still two runs behind with eight wickets intact.
Gayle was unbeaten on a typically robust 36 from 46 balls, with two fours and two sixes, while Chattergoon made 25 with four fours before he edged off-spinner Jeetan Patel to Ross Taylor at slip.
Despite striking success with the second ball of the day, West Indies were lacklustre in their approach in the first session and the Black Caps prospered with opener Tim McIntosh reeling off his maiden Test century.
The stoic, 29-year old left-hander made 136, striking 21 fours in an innings that lasted a shade over 7-1/2 hours and came from 337 balls. His dismissal after lunch with New Zealand looking ominous at 316 for four, triggered a collapse from which the hosts never recovered and they lost their last six wickets for 55 runs.
