Celebrating on a budget

The parties were not as prolific this season as last year, suggesting a cut in entertainment spending, and now the traditional New Year's Eve hosts are looking to specials to entice business.
Still, the parties are not cheap with prices ranging as high as US$400 (J$32,000) to ring in the New Year in style.
But, there are also offers out there that contain spending to under $7,000.
"We have stayed basically within last year's budget, but nothing is reduced in terms of what we offer," says Nancy McLean, food and beverage manager at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, traditionally one of the more popular places to ring in the new year.
"I think we offer an excellent package and we still take into consideration the economic situation."
Pegasus has a special group rate of $69,000 for 10 people, or $6,900 per person.
The individual rate is $7,500 which buys food, a glass of champagne and party favours.
"If one wants to be flamboyant and buy additional champagne, by all means, they will be able to do this," said McLean.
Last year, the charge was $6,500.
The hotel is also offering an all-inclusive package that provides overnight stay for two, as well as two tickets to the party for US$400, the equivalent of J$16,000 per person.
"At the end of the day, you have to think about the clients and customers. If customers mean a lot to you, you have to do something for them," said McLean.
Economic challenges
At the nearby Hilton Kingston, that hotel has a special US$55 per person double occupancy on offer for a basic room, but that excludes taxes and other charges.
Single occupancy is US$90.
"Prices have gone up and we did spend some more on planning the end-of-year party. But, in keeping with economic challenges ,we are trying to make the event affordable," Sales Director Claudette Kenlock said.
The cost to party into the New Year is additional, up to J$5,100 more.
In Montego Bay, the Rose Hall Resort and Spa has an all-inclusive package of $8,360, while Half Moon has a US$175 (J$14,000) package that includes food and party favours.
"Come in your best '70s outfit and big heel boot," said hotel rep Marcia McLaughlin.
