Striking the right balance

Monique Rainford - HER HEALTH

During my residency training and my first job, I was required to be on call during the holidays. Although this is true to some extent now, it was different then.

I was required, like most residents at the time, to spend 24- to 36-hour shifts in the hospital. At that time of year, we often took call every other night to have a few days off for either Christmas or New Year's.

Although we were all very tired, the sacrifice was worth it because it allowed those of us who had family out of town (or the country) to travel home for the holidays.

What do I remember about those nights on call? Very little, but I remember much more about the trips home and the time I spent in-between those rigorous work hours.

Live and enjoy

I remember, in particular, one New Year's Eve spent at a party with a group of friends. I returned home very late and was very tired for that New Year's Day shift at work. Fortunately, the work requirements were relatively light and I was able to rest on call.

What is the point of these recollections? My message is simple - live and enjoy your life while you are able to.

Many of my patients inform me that they are unable to eat properly and exercise because of the demands of work. While work is essential, and I encourage each one to work diligently at his or her chosen calling, balance is important. Try not to neglect family, friends or even your health and well-being because of work. Take the time - no matter how short - to communicate with the people you care about. So for the New Year, ensure health of body and mind.

Years later when you reflect on your life, it is unlikely that you will reminisce about multiple hours on the job. Rather, you may recall fondly how you spent your time off or lament what you missed. The right balance for your life will allow more of the former and less of the latter.

Happy New Year!
