SCJ sale is short-sighted

The Editor, Sir:

I read the letter of December 30 on the divestment of the sugar industry to the Infinity group and I am in agreement with the writer who asked "Why sell?".

The Jamaican Government it seems to me continues to make big decisions with small and short-sighted action without any vision of where we are going. World leaders are rethinking the old ways of doing things yet the Government of Jamaica continues to go the other direction to our detriment.

The Government should look at how Brazil uses its sugar factories and sugar cane juices and the waste products left behind.

We need to keep our factories and transform them into tools to make ethanol for our cars, plywood for our houses and toilet paper, along with fuel to run generators to make electric power, to name a few.

The situation in our country calls for selfless and collective leadership towards our collective development.

I, too, believe that the selling or divesting of the resources of public property owned by the state should be approved by referendum.

I am, etc.,
