SVG not considering home advantage

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC):

Undefeated St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) are not considering being at home an automatic advantage in the forthcoming Caribbean zone Under-20 football finals.

SVG will play alongside Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic from January 9-13 for a spot in the CONCACAF Under-20 final round qualifiers for the FIFA U20 World Championship. Only the final round winners are guaranteed a spot in the CONCACAF play-offs in Trinidad in March.

Home teams in sport are usually considered to have benefits of home-support and familiarity with the conditions, but the SVG Football Federation (SVGFF) president Joseph Delves thinks pressure from local fans often make things difficult.

"Being at home, the crowd can be so critical and the local players get a little bit intimated by expectations of the crowd, so playing at home can be double-edged sword," Delves told CMC Sport.

They cruised through the first round of Caribbean Football Union (CFU) qualifying in Grenada seven months ago with a 3-0 record, defeating Guyana (2-1), British Virgin Islands (23-1) and Grenada (1-0).
