The expected challenges of 2009 can be overcome if Jamaicans unite, Portia Simpson Miller, the opposition leader, said in her New Year's Day message to the nation.

The People's National Party's (PNP) leader said that despite gloomy indicators for this year in various sectors, new partnerships should establish consensus on the survival, growth and development of the country.

"At this time of grave economic and social challenges, we need to band together - community by community and parish by parish - as one family working for the betterment of our country," she said.

"Every generation before ours faced challenges. However, with strength, courage and determination they triumphed over these adversities," said Simpson Miller.

Reflecting on the past year, she said crime and violence, road accidents and the abuse of citizens, especially women and children, had blighted the nation's reputation.

"All of us should resolve that for the year ahead, we will do our part to foster love, peace and unity," she said.

Quoting National Hero Marcus Garvey, the opposition leader said Jamaicans were responsible for charting their individual destinies.
