Munro College is mourning a student who was killed in motor-vehicle accident along the Barbary Hall main road in St Elizabeth yesterday.
The student has been identified as 17-year-old Amal Clarke.
Amal, a lower-sixth former, died after the vehicle in which he was travelling was hit by a minibus. He was on his way to school to board ahead of the Easter term, which starts today.
Police report that sometime after 2 p.m., Amal and a friend were in a car being driven by his older brother, Mikhail Clarke, en route to the school.
Hit by a bus
On reaching a section of the Barbary Hall road, in the vicinity of G-Spot nightclub, the car was hit at the side by the bus.
The three passengers were rushed to the Black River Hospital where Amal was pronounced dead.
His brother and their friend, Dennis Bruce, 20, of Logwood Avenue in Black River, were admitted.
Mikhail is a 25-year-old fireman attached to the Black River station.
The driver of the minibus, 47-year-old Michael Simpson of Southfield district in the parish, also escaped with minor injuries. He was treated and released from the Black River Hospital.
Amal's death sent shock waves through his hometown, Black River. Members of the community described the younger son of the late Michael Clarke as a bright light in the nation's future.
Brilliant student
Munro College principal Bradford Gayle told The Gleaner that the school has lost a brilliant student.
"Amal was a student who was well mannered and respected by all. He was also a member of the school's prefect body, helping to maintain discipline among the boys attending the institution," Gayle said.
The accident brings to four, the number of persons who have died in road crashes in the parish since the start of 2009.
On New Year's Day, a two-vehicle collision along the Brompton main road left three people dead.
