Protecting our young children
Published: Monday | January 5, 2009
In recent times more horrifying news on abandoned, neglected children have been sending shock waves across Jamaica.
We can do better in our communities to save our very young children. I am suggesting that the Ministry of Education direct all schools to place child protection on the agendas of their parent-teacher association meetings.
The Ministry of Health could assist by allowing resource persons to visit their clinics to sensitise patients who sit and wait for hours.
The churches all over Jamaica could educate from their pulpits. Wherever groups meet, let us add a line to the agendas. This is Jamaica's concern and our helpless babies should not be left at great risk while a neighbour says 'it is not my business'.
Changes in behaviour
Residents could be taught how to watch their communities and take note of changes in the behaviour of parents whom they know to have young children. Part of the training would be how and where to report any unusual happenings which raise concern.
Persons who are reporting would want to be assured of the confidentiality of their reports.
We would like to know more about the agencies directly related to children. If I were to be asked what are their functions I could not tell. Will the Child Development Agency and the children's advocate please tell us how we can help you. The nation has to be placed on red alert.
I am, etc.,
