Time to change strategy
Published: Monday | January 5, 2009
Justice and peace are inextricably bound together by an unbreakable cord. To seek peace without justice is an act in futility which could also be described as an act of insanity. Sometimes, the absence of hostilities is mistaken for peace. We should avoid that particular error.
As we enter 2009 and the turbulence and uncertainties that have become the norm in this era of the so-called war on terrorism confront us, we must recognise the need for a change in strategy. There is a sad reality that seems to have eluded far too many of us; that is, terrorism is the avenue used by those who perceive it to be the route to achieving justice. Sadly, for many, it is perceived as not only the route but the only route available. The dichotomy of freedom fighter/terrorist exists because what is seen is dependent upon who is looking, hence, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
For justice to be delivered in any circumstance, the contending facts must be fairly presented and evaluated. This principle is applicable at all levels including the international. Those who hope for peace, while trampling on justice, can forget it. They will eventually realise that armies can destroy infrastructures and kill people but the rebellion that forestalls peace never ceases before the perception of justice is achieved.
Conflict resolution
The war on terrorism, therefore, will never be won from the barrels of guns but through dialogue and the willingness to hear and understand that the other side also has a point of view. Successful conflict resolution cannot be attained by being concerned about the problems of one side only. When reasoning replaces emotion and bigotry, the door will be opened for justice to enter, bringing with her peace to which she is inextricable bound.
To Jamaica and the world, let the message be as Jesus entreated us: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Let us, therefore, reaffirm our pledge to stand up for justice so that peace and progress may be ushered in. Let the word be love. Think of it, love of fellowman eliminates enemies.
