Lewis hits hundred as Windwards flog Leewards

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC):

Captain Rawl Lewis stroked a magnificent hundred and Shane Shillingford produced a 12-wicket match haul for the Windward Islands to badly whip the Leewards in a preseason match yesterday.

In a final tune-up game for the 2009 WICB four-day regional tournament, the Windwards completed an innings and 25-run victory over the home side inside two days of their scheduled three-day fixture at the Edgar Gilbert Sporting Complex.

After Lewis hit 121 not out and steered the Windwards to 284 all out and a beefy 164-run first innings lead, Shillingford snared his second six-wicket haul and limited the home side's second-innings total to another flimsy total, 139 all out.

Leewards frustrated

From an overnight 170 for eight in a first-innings reply to the Leewards' 120 all out, the Windwards frustrated the Leewards with a defiant 80-run ninth-wicket stand between Lewis and Deighton Butler (25).

The veteran Lewis, 42 overnight, cracked 15 fours and five sixes in a magnificent innings.

The 34-year-old Grenadian scored freely with pull shots off the fast bowlers and used his feet well to the spinners, repeatedly hitting straight boundaries as he batted the Leewards out of the game.

Shillingford made 11 and pacer Gavin Tonge led the Leewards' bowling with four for 38.

Medium pacer Wilden Cornwall (2-26) and leg-spinner Anthony Martin (2-64) shared four wickets, while Tonito Willett (1-46) and Omari Banks (1-57) also picked up wickets for the Leewards.

Facing a heavy first-innings deficit, the Leewards made a disastrous start and quickly stumbled to 14 for three.

Captain and top batsman Runako Morton fell for three to Butler, West Indies Under-19 star Kieran Powell (6) fell quickly as well, and the poor form of exciting left-hander Austin Richards continued.

First-innings duck

Richards, who made a 'pair' in an inter-squad practice match earlier in the week and also made a duck in the first innings on Saturday, went for just five.

The 19-year-old Devon Thomas top-scored with 34, including four boundaries, while all-rounders Banks (30) and Willett (27) were the next- best scorers, as Shillingford enjoyed another fruitful day with his off-spin.

The 25-year-old Dominican finished with six for 56 to complement his first-innings effort of six for 48 to complete a match haul of 12 for 104.

Pacers Butler (2-18) and Mervyn Matthew (1-18) shared three wickets and off-break bowler Liam Sebastien (1-10) also got among the wickets as the Windwards wrapped up the game at 4:45 p.m. with more than a day to spare.

When the 2009 WICB four-day regional tournament starts Friday, the Leewards will face Jamaica here in St Kitts and the Windwards will travel to Grenada to face Guyana.
