Fibroid awareness

Published: Monday | February 16, 2009

Monday, March 9, is Fibroid Awareness Day, and local organisation Caribbean Woman has launched its annual information campaign on fibroids. This is in an attempt to draw national attention to this major women's health concern. This year's theme is 'Addressing Fibroids, Get Informed. Take Control. Tell a Friend' .

The organisation will stage a free expo at the Hilton Kingston Jamaica, on Sunday, March 8, followed by the circulation of 50,000 copies of complimentary reference magazine islandwide on Monday, March 9.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus, with the highest incidents in women of colour. They may remain small without symptoms or can grow to the size of a five-month pregnancy. Just about every woman has a fibroid story or knows someone who does and, chances are, you have had a sister, friend, co-worker, or very personal experience with fibroids.

By current estimates, seven in every 10 women in Jamaica have or are affected by fibroids.

The one-on-one dialogue through the publication and campaign activities will encourage greater sensitivity among our men, while providing a wealth of information regarding treatments and options for women in terms of the diet, finances and their personal well-being.

Endorsement

Founded in 2004, Caribbean Woman has, since its inception, received the endorsement and involvement of a wide cross section of local organisations, including the Medical Association of Jamaica; the American College of Obstetrics and Gyynaecology; the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Child Health UHWI; Jamaica Association for the Advancement of Mid Life Health; Pharmaceutical Association of Jamaica and the Nurses' Association of Jamaica among others.
