STETHS, Port Antonio in Headley Cup decider

Back-to-back all-island champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) will seek to add yet another ISSA/Grace Headley Cup title to their collection when they face surprise finalists Port Antonio High in the three-day final at Chedwin Park, St Catherine, beginning at 10 a.m.

The defending champions, who won the rural area knockout earlier this season, will be seeking their third Headley Cup title in as many years, and 22nd overall, this after reaching the final 28 times in the last 30 years.

Port Antonio, who last year captured the experimental and now defunct Headley Cup B League, will be seeking their first hold on the coveted title.

"The goal is to remain focused and play some basic cricket as once we do that we should come out on top," said a confident Clive Ledgister, coach of STETHS, who are on course for the rural double.

"The spirit in the camp is pretty good and everybody is pretty much focused.

"We are not looking down at anybody as once any team makes the final, they are capable of winning, so we will plan to be on top of our game," he added.

STEHTS have already beaten the Portland team once this season - in the semi-final of the knockout competition by four wickets.

Leading the way for STETHS will be national Under-19 representatives, opener Nick Blackwood, wicket-keeper Maverick Perry and pacer Richard Simpson. Respective national Under-17 and Under-15 representatives, leg-spinner Donovan Nelson and batsman Paul Palmer are also expected to contribute significantly.

With such a star-studded line-up it appears a difficult assignment for Port Antonio. However, Port Antonio's assistant coach, Dudley Marshall, said his team remains undaunted.

"We know that STETHS are the defending champions and have very good players, but if we are cautious and play according to our abilities, anything is possible," said Marshall.

"We are going with the intention to win as we are coming from far and want something to show for it," he added.

Port Antonio will look towards national Under-19 invitees Ashai Newell and Damion Gray and captain and batting all-rounder, Horace Grossett for major contributions.
