Leewards win, but Windwards end second

ST THOMAS, US Virgin Islands (CMC):

Leeward Islands survived a scare from the Windward Islands before securing a 28-run victory, 25 minutes before lunch on the final day of their final-round WICB Regional four-day match yesterday.

Starting the day seemingly poised to complete an easy victory after reducing the Windwards to 110 for seven at the close on Monday, the Leewards were forced to sweat before finally dismissing the visitors for 220 at the Adelita Cancryn Ground.

WINDWARDS 271 (Rawl Lewis 81 not out, Johnson Charles 35, Mervyn Matthew 35, Donwell Hector 26, Andre Fletcher 23; Anthony Martin 4-54, Brent Defreitas 2-29, Tonito Willett 2-59) & 220 (Shane Shillingford 57, Lyndon James 50, Deighton Butler 43; Gavin Tonge 5-44, Anthony Martin 3-36, Brent Defreitas 2-77).

Despite the loss, however, Windwards claimed second place in the standings with 79 points behind winners Jamaica. The Leewards finished on 77 points to claim third place.

AT PROVIDENCE, Guyana:

Guyana drew with Barbados in their 14th and final round WICB Regional four-day match on at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
