Best of the West; Reaping fruits of her labour
WESTERN BUREAU: Shaneika Hazle, a past student of Montego Bay High School for Girls, has done her alma mater proud with excellent achievements in the 2010 CSEC exams.
The 17-year-old got 10 distinctions in biology, chemistry, English language, English literature, information technology, mathematics, physics, principles of accounts, religious education and Spanish.
In 2009, she did GCE history and gained an A for that subject.
"I kind of expected the ones, but I doubted biology, to some extent, because of my performance in it in school," admitted Shaneika. "I was really excited at the result."
She hopes to attend sixth form at Hampton School in St Elizabeth.
Shaneika lists family, friends, teachers and God as motivators for her outstanding CSEC performance.
"My mom, she was the one who helped me and inspired me, and also my sister," she remarked.
"My friends and I formed a study group. I think that's what helped me, the study group. And my Spanish teacher, Ms Cogle, she helped and motivated me. And without God, I couldn't do it."
Shaneika was also a recipient of the Montego Co-operative Credit Union Scholarship in 2005, which funded her studies at Montego Bay High.
"My mom heard of the scholarship from a friend, and she applied for it," she explained, adding that her mother was also a member of the credit union.
"We got a call, and I got it because my average in GSAT was good."
Shaneika advises other students to buckle down and bury their heads in books.
"Basically, what I've realised is that in education, there's a lot of hard work, but the fruit is sweet because, in the end, you're the one who will benefit," she asserted.
"Sometimes you may feel like you want to give up, but continue the good path, because in the end you're the one who will be proud."
