GENERAL ELECTION INFORMATION
The last election day was on March 30th, 1993. The Jamaican Constitution indicates the following:

Clause 64   (2)     Subject to the provisions of subsection (3) of this section, Parliament, unless sooner dissolved, shall continue for five years from the date of its first sitting after any dissolution and shall then stand dissolved.
                      (3)     At any time when Jamaica is at war, Parliament may from time to time extend the period of five years specified in subsection (2) of this section for not more than twelve months at a time: Provided that the life of Parliament shall not be extended under this subsection for more than two years.

Clause 65   (1)     A general election of members of the House of Representatives shall be held at such time within three months after every dissolution of Parliament as the Governor-General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, shall appoint by Proclamation published in the Gazette.

Elections in Jamaica are therefore expected to take place prior to the 30th March, 1998. The last announcement from the Electoral Advisory Committee (EAC) suggested that the new voters lists will not be available before Sept. 1997. It therefore seems probable that elections will take place between October 1997 and March 1998.

There are 60 constituencies in Jamaica of which 52 are currently held by the People's National Party and 8 by the Jamaica Labour Party.
