THE NDM  IS COMMITTED TO:

  • An Independent Parliament. Your Parliament would be independent of the prime Minsiter and the Cabinet, and your MP's would go there to protect, YOU, not to agree with whatever the Government wants.
  • Control on Taxation. Government could not raise your taxes or introduce new ones without the agreement of your MP's. The days of Nicodemus taxes would be over.
  • Control of Debt. Government could not borrow money beyond a certain limit which would be set out in the Constitution. We will put a clamp on the reckless borrowing that our children will be called upon to pay back.
  • Stamping out Corruption. Strict penalties would be introduced to deal with corruption and a Prosecutor General would be appointed to investigate and prosecute politicians and public officials involved in corruption.
  • Addressing the Needs of the People. Constituency Development Programmes would be set up to deal with the needs of each constituency, and 5% of the budget would be set aside to finance them. No politician would have any control over the disbursement of these funds which would be monitored by independent committees reporting directly to Parliament and Audited by the Auditor General.
  • Independent Local Government and System. City Councils and Parish Councils would be independent of Central Government and would be guaranteed a minimum of 5% of total revenue to enable them to provide and maintain local amenities and services.

  • Financial Disclosure by Politicians. All elected officials would be required to disclose annually their income, assets and liabilities, which will be made public.
  • Regulation of Political Funding. Political parties would be required to disclose their accounts annually and report to the Electoral Commission financial contributions which exceed $25,000 for individuals and $250,000 for groups and corporate entities.
  • Term Limits. The Prime Minister could not serve more than two consecutive terms. MP's could not serve more than three terms.
  • Parliamentary Salaries. The Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministerand the Cabinet cannot vote fat salaries for themselves. Instead their increases would be tied to raises granted to the public sector.
