VOTER'S INFORMATION
It is probable that elections will take place between
October 1997 and March 1998. The next election is likely to be contested
by the two major parties, plus the new National Democratic Movement headed
by Mr. Brude Golding, formerly of the Jamaica Labour Party. They may not
contest all 60 electoral seats.
Voting in this next election is likely to take place at a reduced number
of polling stations. At the last election there were 5,569. Voters will
be identified by the identification cards with magnetic strips and by finger
prints. The EAC, the Government office responsible for the preparation
of the electoral list, and the organisation of the election, consists of
two directors from the People's National Party (Maxine Henry-Wilson and
Donald Buchanan) plus two from the Jamaica labour Party (Ryan Peralto and
Danville Davidson) and three independent directors (Corrine McLarty, Prof.
Gerald Lalor and Mr. Winston Chin-See).
One of the independent directors, Mr. Winston Chin-See, a retired attorney-at-law,
chairs the EAC.
The EAC has recently awarded a contract to the American Corporation
, TRW for US$14.75 million to put in new enumeration technology which will
make identification of voters occur by an electronic comparison of finger
prints.
