JLP 'uncovers' another election plot         December 15, 1997

Spauldings, Clarendon: Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader Edward Seaga yesterday met with the international observer team led by Dr. Robert Pastor in Kingston where a number of issues, including the alleged plots of the People's National Party (PNP) to rig the election, were discussed.

Speaking at a JLP meeting in Christiana, Audley Shaw, the JLP candidate for North East Manchester, said the PNP has developed a number of corrupt strategies which they intend to use in an attempt to win Thursday's election. This allegation has been denied by the PNP.

Mr. Shaw told party supporters that other than what the leader of the JLP had already disclosed, yet another plot had been uncovered, where the PNP is alleged to be masterminding a plan to terrorise JLP supporters in three Manchester constituencies.

He said that information that he has received points to an offer of $1 million which has been made to a well-known PNP political activist from Concrete Jungle in Kingston who has been ordered to carry out acts of terrorism in Southern, Central and North West Manchester to prevent electors from going to the poll.

Mr. Shaw also noted that the persons involved have hired 12 cars, which are to be led by the activist and other supporters into the three constituencies starting today. He said the matter has been reported to the police, the international observer team and the local observer group, Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE).

When contacted, John Junor, the PNP candidate for Central Manchester, called the allegation ludicrous. Mr. Junor pointed out that the world of allegations being thrown about by the JLP is a desperate attempt being made to create confusion among the electorate.
