Public finally sees voters list                       December 10, 1997

The new voters' list has finally been put up for scrutiny by the public, nine days before the December 18 General Election.

The Gleaner was told by the staff at several post offices yesterday afternoon that copies of the list for the various constituencies had been delivered and were being viewed by the public.

At 4 p.m., the Postmaster at Allman Town Post Office in Kingston said persons had not found any problems with the list. "They just look and they leave," she said.

The office of the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) at Windward Road in Kingston had posted a copy of the list for the East Kingston and Port Royal constituency for viewing, said enumerator Sheldon Thomas.

Verona Kerr, postal clerk at the Chapelton Post Office in Clarendon, said a copy of the list had just arrived. She said already one person had found her name on the list twice, while another was enumerated in her 'pet name'.

However up to 4:20 p.m. the Stony Hill and Annotto Bay post offices had not received their copies of the list.

On Monday, the EOJ promised that the list would be placed in post offices, police stations and other public buildings "by the latest" yesterday afternoon.

EOJ public information officer, Neville Graham, said voters can find out the location of the polling divisions by calling the Electoral Office's hotline, 1-888-991-VOTE. He said voters should have their enumeration certificates with them when they call. He said returning officers could also tell voters where they are to cast their ballots on Election Day.
