SIR ALISTER MCINTYRE, 1991

Strong leadership qualities

AlisterMcIntyre20010622ON TUESDAY April 14, 1992, former UWI vice-chancellor, Sir Alister McIntyre, walked away with the Gleaner Honour Award for 1991.

Sir Alister was selected by the panel of judges for the award on the basis of 'the strong leadership qualities which he has displayed as head of the university,' in the words of the citation accompanying the award.

That leadership, the citation said, 'has ensured that the impact of the university on the Jamaican society, as well as that of the wider Caribbean, continues, thereby bringing into sharper focus the vital role of the university in the community.'

Sir Alister's contribution to the Jamaican society, beyond the confines of the campus, was also cited: 'his reaching out into the Jamaican society, through service as an economic adviser at the national level, to make a significant contribution to national development.'

Sir McIntyre resigned from the post of Chief Technical Adviser of the Caribbean Community's Regional Negotia-ting Machinery (RNM) last year.
