Distribution of Relief Supplies Well Underway
Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has reported that the distribution of relief supplies is well underway, listing several activities in four parishes.

In Clarendon, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, along with the Red Cross has distributed some 3000 food packages, 200 blankets and 500 tarpaulins. The trucking of water to affected communities continues to take place. In addition, the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance through the ODPEM has also been placing water tanks in several Clarendon communities.

In the parish of St. Elizabeth, over 3200 persons have been assessed and the Salvation Army and the Red Cross have been distributing food packages.

Almost 4000 families in Westmoreland have been assisted from 50 different locations and, the Parish Disaster Coordinators have been assisting schools with clean up activities.

Over 5000 persons in Manchester have registered for relief supplies and, over 1000 assessments have been completed.

St. Ann Health Department Embark on Vector Control Drive
The St. Ann Health Department will commence a vector control drive to reduce the mosquito population in the parish.

Vector control teams will be dispatched throughout the parish over the next two weeks. The teams will conduct mosquito control work including larvaecidal work, biological control and thermal fogging.

Thermal fogging will be carried out daily between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Areas of focus include St. Ann's Bay, Seville Heights, Lime Hall, Mount Edgecombe, Borobridge, Runaway Bay, Moneague and Parry Town.

Mobile Clinics to Serve Clarendon Communities
The Clarendon Health Department will be instituting a schedule of mobile clinics to serve communities where some 22 health centers, remain inoperable in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.

The Mobile Team, which will be in place for six weeks, will consist of a Public Health Inspector, a Public Health Nurse, a District Medical Officer or Family Nurse Practitioner, and a Health Educator and, will commence operations on September 28.

The team will cover the following designated areas from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.:
Portland Cottage - Tuesday September 28
Rocky Point - Thursday September 30
Thompson Town - Tuesday October 5
Mitchell Town - Wednesday October 6
Lionel Town - Wednesday October 13

No to price controls
Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology, Phillip Paulwell has said that there was no need to enforce price controls given the significant reduction in price gouging that followed Hurricane Ivan.

He explained that strong consumer lobby efforts and the work of the media as factors that caused the problem to recede. Since last week, the Consumer Affairs Commission has been publishing pre-Ivan and post-Ivan prices to guard consumers against unfair increases.

Blood Bank Drive at the Portmore Branch of JMMB
There will be a Blood Bank Drive at the Portmore Branch of the Jamaica Money Market Brokers between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 pm on Tuesday, September 28. This is the second collaborative effort between the Blood Bank and the JMMB, the first of which was held at its headquarters located on Haughton Road in Kingston last week.
