The NWA attends to malfunctioning traffic signals
Over the weekend the National Works Agency intensified repair activities to
malfunctioning traffic signals in the Corporate Area, restoring traffic lights
at Windward Road, Sea Breeze Avenue and Paradise Street off the Michael Manley
Boulevard and, the Caymanas Crossing on Mandela Highway over the weekend.
In addition, the NWA technical team is currently undertaking repairs at the Eastwood Park - Molynes Road intersection. Repair work to various intersections in Downtown Kingston, however, has been hampered by inadequate voltage.
Meanwhile, the NWA is urging motorists to proceed with caution at intersections
with malfunctioning traffic signals.
Safety Signs and Barriers to be erected
The NWA has been instructed by the Ministry of Transport and Works to erect
safety signs and barriers along the Buff Bay Valley Road in Portland, in order
to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, who use this roadway.
Normality restored to most health centres
The Ministry of Health is reporting that of the 324 health centres islandwide,
86 percent are functioning at normal capacity. A total of 45 centres however,
are still closed as a result of severe structural damage, lack of essential
utilities or inaccessible roads.
Communities without access to medical facilities will be able to access services through mobile clinics. A mobile team visited the Portland Cottage Community earlier today and, will move on to Rocky Point on Thursday, September 30.
Salvation Army intensifies efforts in affected communities
The Salvation Army, which is part of the Welfare Sub-Committee of the National
Disaster Committee, will be intensifying its efforts in Cave Valley, St. Ann
and Southfield in St. Elizabeth.
To date, the Salvation Army has provided food parcels to 4500 persons who have
left shelters and also to those who refused to go to shelters, but required
help.
In addition, the organization has provided food parcels for basic schools, children's
homes and old age homes.
