ONR Chief pleased with relief and reconstruction progress
Chief Executive Officer of the Office of National Reconstruction, (ONR), Danville
Walker has expressed appreciation with the progress of the relief and reconstruction
efforts.
"I am encouraged by the progress we have made so far in both the relief
efforts and in the rebuilding drive. It demonstrates that the Jamaican family
at home and abroad is fully capable of a harmonious and speedy reconstruction
of our country," Mr. Walker said at the Jamaica Employer's Federation Recovery
Forum, held at the Jamaica Conference Centre earlier today.
He also urged the business sector to help with rebuilding efforts by offering special assistance to those employees adversely affected by Hurricane Ivan. A heightened sense of partnership and cooperation, the CEO added would be necessary to get production back to optimal levels.
JSIF adds support to reconstruction efforts
The Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) will be lending support to the country's
reconstruction efforts, by upping its assistance to the education sector. In
order to do this, some $130 million will be channeled from its regular programme
into assisting this venture.
The Fund will be working along with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture to repair approximately 100 institutions including Infant, All-Age, Primary and Basic Schools.
Donation of Relief Supplies from Atlanta based Jamaicans
Donations of medical supplies, stand-by generators, non-perishable food items,
clothing, money and building supplies were among the relief supplies donated
last weekend by the Jamaican Community in Atlanta and friends of Jamaica.
The items were donated during the three-day drive organized by the Union of Jamaica Organization in Atlanta, at the Hillside Presbyterian Church. Radio stations including WRFG 89.3 FM, WCLK 91.9 FM and 1010 AM conducted broadcasts from the collection site for over 10 hours in support of the effort.
Jamaica's Honorary Consul to Atlanta, Vin Martin stated that the drive would continue this weekend. He added that close to US$10,000 dollars had been contributed to the relief drive.
NWA closes Suttons Bridge in Clarendon
The National Works Agency (NWA) has closed the Suttons Bridge, located on the
Lower Chapleton to Rock River main road in Clarendon with immediate effect,
as a result of the collapse of sections of the wing walls. Motorists travelling
to Chapleton may use the alternative route along Suttons to Turners Four Paths,
then proceed into Chapleton.
Meanwhile, the Rhoden Hall main road from Sandy River to Kellits, which was
initially scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic on September 30, will remain
closed until Monday October 4. The agency is making every effort to restore
access to the affected communities, within the shortest possible time.
