Hurricane fund to be used only for reconstruction purposes
Chief Executive Officer of the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR), Danville
Walker has said that the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund will be used strictly
for reconstruction efforts. The ONR's operational expenses, he clarified, would
be financed through other means such as private sector donations.
Members of the public may make contributions to the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund at any of the following institutions: Citibank, National Commercial Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, First Caribbean International Bank, RBTT Bank, First Global Bank, Dehring Bunting & Golding Merchant Bank, Pan Caribbean Merchant Bank, MF&G Trust & Finance and, Capital & Credit Merchant Bank.
Evaluations for 50,000 houses completed
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security is reporting that to date, evaluations
for 50,000 houses have been completed. This figure represents more than 70 percent
of the families recently affected by Hurricane Ivan. It is expected that the
evaluation process will be completed by the weekend.
Reduced number of persons in shelters
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has reported that the number of families
in shelters has reduced from 25,000 to 108. The reduction can be attributed
to increased relief activities across the island, which represents an expenditure
of over $20 million.
Call to develop plan of action
Executive Director of the Social Development Commission (SDC) and Chairman of
the Local Government Task Force, Robert Bryan is appealing for more community
organizations in St. Catherine to work with the SDC to develop disaster preparedness
plans. Disaster preparedness, he said, could not, be done solely by external
agencies.
Health Ministry steps up monitoring of food handling establishments
Several kilograms of food have been condemned and seized islandwide as the Ministry
of Health steps up its efforts to monitor food handling establishments in the
aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
In Portland, for example, 12000 kilograms of food items have been condemned.
These categories of food include meat products and bottled and boxed drinks.
