totaling $900 million, which have already been pledged to the Jamaica Hurricane
Relief Fund. In addition, the development of a comprehensive communication programme
is in the pipeline to enable the ONR to communicate effectively with the public.
Meanwhile, the managers of the ONR, who also the Board of Trustees for the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund, will be involved in the allocation of funds from that source, to sectors in the economy that suffered extensive dislocation and to which restoration is vital to the process of national reconstruction.
Land to be identified for relocation of Brighton community
Plans are afoot for the reconstruction of dwellings and relocation of the Brighton
community in Westmoreland, which was damaged extensively by Hurricane Ivan.
The Commissioner of Lands is in the process of identifying the necessary lands
in the area for this purpose. Also, a Venezuelan army contingent is already
in the island to assist with the reconstruction.
Additionally, a team of officials have been instructed to investigate the most urgent needs of residents of Southern St. Elizabeth, Old Harbour and Rocky Point, which were some of the areas hardest hit by the hurricane.
Voucher system on track
The voucher system established for the farming community is on track to begin
early next week. It is anticipated that farmers will begin to benefit from fertilizers,
seeds and chemicals during the same period.
Soccer game nets CAN$5000 for relief fund
The organizers of the first Arnold Milan International Soccer Cup have donated,
CAN$5000 to the Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund. The funds were raised from a
match held in Toronto on September 19, between Jamaican Premier League 2003
Champion, Portmore United and the Canadian Professional Soccer League's Metro
Lions.
Previously, the funds realized from the match were to be shared between the
two soccer clubs. However after the devastation of Hurricane Ivan it was agreed
that the proceeds would go towards the relief effort.
