Farmers urged to register with agriculture ministry
Farmers are being urged to register their agricultural practices with the Ministry
of Agriculture so that, the government will be better able to assist them in
instances of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Ivan.
Indeed, the failure of farmers to register with the Ministry has led to problems
in assessing the full damage to crops across the country in the aftermath of
Hurricane Ivan.
Farmers are advised that in order to access any assistance from the government,
they will have to complete and submit a form giving details of their losses.
The forms are available at the offices of the Rural Agricultural Development
Authority (RADA).
Cable and Wireless Jamaica hands over generator to Blood Bank
In an effort to boost the response of the Health Sector in the wake of natural
disasters, Cable and Wireless Jamaica has made another contribution to the ongoing
Hurricane relief efforts, with the handing over of a 281kv generator to the
National Blood Transfusion Services located on Slipe Pen Road in Kingston.
During the hurricane over 100 units of blood, 130 units of blood products and re-agents amounting to a loss of nearly US$38,000 were lost as result of a malfunctioning generator.
Repair project in St. Thomas to benefit 350 farmers
Repair work on 2.3 kilometres of roadway between Bath and Beacon Hill in St.
Thomas is scheduled to begin by the end of October.
The project, valued at $10 million, will be carried out under the Parish Infrastructure Development Programme (PIDP) of the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sport.
Recently, Beacon Hill was cut off from other communities with the passage of Hurricane Ivan, and relief supplies had to be flown in by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
The project will benefit over 350 farmers in the community.
