$3.6 billion estimated to reconstruct road, agriculture and education infrastructure
According to the Office of National Reconstruction (ONR) preliminary assessments indicate that roads, agriculture, residential properties and schools are chief among the areas requiring the reconstruction financing. Initial estimates are that $3.6 billion is needed for the reconstruction of roads, 900 million for agriculture and fishery and 700 million for educational institutions.

Of the over $900 million pledged only $222 million has so far been collected.
The ONR is therefore encouraging corporate citizens and other organizations to come forward and assist in the reconstruction efforts.

Health Ministry address psychological effects of Hurricane Ivan
Director of the Mental Health Unit in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Earl Wright, has assured that work was being done to address the adverse psychological effects of Hurricane Ivan.

Dr. Wright was responding to a call from the Chief Medical Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Barry Wint for more psychological attention to be given to persons severely affected by Hurricane Ivan.

The Mental Health Director further informed that persons suffering from posttraumatic symptoms after the passage of hurricane Ivan were being screened at various health centers across the island.
The health officials were speaking at the opening of the Mental Health Conference at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Downtown Kingston on October 14.

Dr. Wint also noted the need for more emphasis and recognition to be placed on the mental health challenge resulting from disasters such as Hurricane Ivan. Such recognition he added, would influence the response to the particular stressors that manifested themselves during and after disasters.

As part of the activities to observe Mental Health Week, mental health teams from the South and South East health regions visited the hurricane victims in Portland Cottage in Clarendon, on October 15.

NWA temporarily closes Bog walk Gorge for blasting
The Bog Walk Gorge will be closed tomorrow October 20 from 11: 00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The closure is to facilitate the blasting of huge boulders that were washed on to the roadway during the passage of Hurricane Ivan.

The agency has decided to remove the boulders as they may compromise the safety of the motoring public. Due to the size of the boulders, blasting is the most effective means of removing them. Motorists are therefore being advised to use the alternative route through Barry.
