Rehabilitation project for schools damaged by Hurricane Ivan
Minister of Education Youth and Culture, Maxine Henry Wilson, has announced
the implementation of a rehabilitation project for schools that suffered damage
during the recent hurricane. The Minister said that the restoration project
would commence as early as this week in some institutions.
She informed that technical persons from the Ministry and the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) have already visited the affected schools to conduct assessments to determine the extent of the damage and the cost of restoration.
Inventory of school materials and equipment underway
An inventory is being conducted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture
to determine the total number of school books, computers and other equipment
that were lost or damaged as a result of the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
US $10,000 handed over to assist relief efforts
A sum of US$10,000 was presented to Jamaica's Honorary Consul in Atlanta, Vin
Martin by the Reverend Dr. Aaron Parker, pastor of the Zion Hill Baptist Church
in Georgia, to assist in the Hurricane Ivan relief drive. The presentation was
made at a handing over ceremony at the church on Thursday, October 15.
This is the second contribution that the relief fund, which was established in Atlanta, has received thus far from a church, as the Providence Missionary Church recently donated US$2,800. The fund now stands at just over US$20,000.
