NSWMA reports 90 per cent clearance of debris in majority of parishes
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has reported that
ten parishes are 90 per cent cleared of debris and accumulated waste material
generated as a result of the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
The remaining four, which include Clarendon, St. Catherine, Kingston
and St. Andrew are over 70 per cent cleared.
These figures were outlined in a Hurricane Ivan Clean-Up Report submitted
to the Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Sport on
October 19, 2004.
The Authority mobilized additional resources in an effort to initiate
an effective restoration programme islandwide. One aspect of the programme
was the involvement of zonal contractors in areas with the highest accumulation
of storm related debris.
Additional private sector units were also brought into the system to address
the increased demand for heavy-duty equipment.
Distribution of cheques underway
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security on October 19 commenced the
distribution of cheques to more than 180,000 beneficiaries of the Programme
of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH) and 70,000 National
Insurance Scheme (NIS) beneficiaries.
As a result of Hurricane Ivan, PATH beneficiaries were allocated an additional
$800 on their October-November payments, while NIS pensioners received
a one-time payment of $5000 under a special payment programme.
