THE EDITOR, Sir:

One of our deejays once chanted: "Yuh nevah kotch a gal yaad/So how come she a chat/An' a gwaan like sey/A she a put food inna yuh pot?"

I was reminded of these lyrics when I read the report in your paper regarding the admonition to CARICOM by a US envoy (April 4, 2003: 'Watch your lip, CARICOM' - US envoy warns war critics of 'consequences'). According to your story, the envoy has warned Caribbean leaders to watch what they say about the war in Iraq, because the all-conquering, all-ruling US was disappointed in our opinions.

Add to that the comments, via letters to the editor, by other arrogant Americans who are also warning us to shut up, since we rely on them for aid. So, if we chat, dem a go "dash whey de caaffee an' mash de t'ermos" (in a manner of speaking).

I have one thing to say to Jamaicans everywhere, including myself: If wi nevah did a kotch a gal yaad, and if wi did a put food inna wi owna pot, dis libbaty-tekking couldda never tek place. If ever there were a time to think of going back home, that time is now.

I am. etc.,
