Just under
100 Americans companies, subsidiaries and affiliates were believed
to be operating in Jamaica up to March, this year, according to
information supplied by the American Chamber of Commerce of Jamaica
(AMCHAM).
Among other
well-known companies are Aluminium Partners of Jamaica (ALPART),
Kaiser Bauxite Company and Jamalco which are involved in mining
and shipping; KPMG Peat Marwick, chartered accountants; and Johnson
& Johnon, which distributes toileteries and over-the-counter
drugs.
Among the hoteliers
associated with United States firms are Le Meridien Jamaica Pegasus
Hotel and the Hilton Hotel. There are several fast food franchises,
data entry services, garment manufacturers, airline operations,
a health insurance company, banks; manufacturers, distributors and
marketers of petroleum products; manufacturers of electronic equipment,
as well as a communications and data processing company.
United States
firms operating in Jamaica also have a foothold in advertising,
marketing and public relations; in the computer industry; the baking
sector; soda and bottling; bedding; paints and lacquers; sewing
machines and the apparel sector.
Although data
on the total number of persons hired by those companies was not
available, the American companies, subsidiaries and affiliates,
by virtue of their size, among other factors, would account for
a large percentage of the employed workforce in Jamaica.
See page 18
for a list of some of the companies, subsidiaries and affiliates,
and the activities in which they have been engaged. The information
was complied and supplied by AMCHAM.
